I came across the story of Sadako Sasaki and was instantly moved. A survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bombing, Sadako developed leukemia at age 12 and was given just a year to live. Drawing on the Japanese legend of senbazuru (the belief that folding 1,000 origami cranes grants you one wish) she folded crane after crane, first hoping for her own recovery, then eventually wishing for world peace. She was laid to rest with a wreath of 1,000 cranes, forever a symbol of hope, peace, and love.
Her story stopped me in my tracks and made me question my own wishes. If I could have just one, what would it be? Which wish would have the biggest impact? Last a lifetime?
So I set out to paint 1,000 cranes. Maybe someday the gods will grant my wish. What would your one wish be?
